Dollar Shave Club just launched and it has us dudes at SAI pretty excited.
For $1 a month, Dollar Shave Club will send out five dual-blade razor cartridges. For $6 a month, you can get four four-blade razor cartridges. And for $9 a month you get the "executive package" which offers three six-blade cartridges, as well as "Aloe, Vitamin E, and Lavender Lubricating Strip moisturizes and calms sensitive skin."
Dollar Shave Club throws in the handle for free.
Razors are typically super expensive. A 15-pack of
Gillette Mach 3 razor blades costs around $35 on
Amazon. If you sign up for the $1 a month plan on Dollar Shave you'd be saving money.
How can Dollar Shave afford to do this? CEO Michael Dubin
tells Sarah Lacy at PandoDaily that most razor companies are spending their money on marketing, which inflates the cost of razors. His plan is to cut out marketing spending by using social media.
The first video produced by Dollar Shave Club is very funny, so it seems to have a knack for making viral content to sell itself.
Dubin says razor blades are just the start. He's planning on selling other men's grooming products down the road.
The LA-based company has raised $1 million in funding from startup accelerator Science, as well as Forerunner Ventures,
Kleiner Perkins,
Andreessen Horowitz,
Shasta Ventures,
Felicis Ventures and other angels,
