Default Help: Network Connection Sharing - Access Point/Bridge/Range Extender/etc.

Hello All,

It's been a while, how's everyone?

I'm needing some expert help on Network Connection sharing between my home and my parent's house.

So here's the scenario:

1. Both houses are about 400ft apart with a house in between.
2. I have a home networking that run on 1000T based Wired Connection (for HD movies streaming, data backup, etc.) & Home Wireless setup for internet.
3. I want to share that connection with my parents home so they have access to Internet & my Home networking stuffs (streaming HD movies, etc.).

Therefore, what should I get to bridge the 2 houses together?

Is there something that's strong and simple enough so we can place INSIDE both houses?

Or should I get something for outdoor and place it behind our patios and line them up?

I was thinking of something like this

[internet] - [my router & network] - [300N AP Mode] - [Hi-Gain Directional Antenna] ---------- [Hi-Gain Directional Antenna] - [300N Bridge Mode] - [my Parents' 300N AP & Network]

Many thanks

Are you trying to share your connection primarily or enable them to access files on your network?

Just sharing my connection

Once they're in, I can set up so that they can access my files afterward.

Toss a USB wireless card into one of those peanut cans (small coffe can size), point the open end in the direction of your home.

Should be able to get on your network from their house like that.

And if that works, a network repeater would be a good option to strengthen the signal.

Not elegant, but it works well. I've done it over 300 feet anyway..

It's a easy adaptation of the "pringles can antenna"

I actually had someone call me once (at the ISP I work for) wanting me to troubleshoot his wireless connection. He couldn't give me any account info except that he was using his neighbor's wireless.

Both of them were businesses. :ugh:

pretty much I narrowed it down to only needed two AP in bridge mode. However, I'd need the one with the antennas and make a custom parabola template as the reflectors. However, it's tough choosing a good 1GbE Dualband AP that can do 300N easily with good signal.

As of now, I'm leaning toward WRT160NL running DD-WRT v24 in Bridge Mode. That'd be the simplest way and possibly the cheapest. Of course, I'd have to forgo the Gigabit Connection and only run on Max 108Mbps speed, but IMO, that'd be suffice?

Is there any other router that can offer the same and run on higher N speed?

Two ubiquiti nanostations should do it, esp if you have a height advantage on the house inbetween.

you may want to lean towards the bullet with a parabola though.

http://www.microcom.us/nsm5.html should do you well, the loco M5 would probably be the best for your setup but it hasn't be released yet... this should be more than good though, it's just a little bigger

:edit:

You should have little to no problem with this setup, sure it won't be giga but your parents house won't need to see that speed. You can run a local gigabit on both ends which will free up the network. The M5 should gibe you enough point-to-point to suffice what's needed to be shared between the houses IMHO.

Find two abandoned WRT54G's, flash them with DD-WRT and get custom parabolas h:
