Well the del Sol S is pretty stripped compared to the Si and VTEC models...pathetic engine, no power locks, no A/C, no cruise, crappy sound system, etc... (The one you're looking at may have some of the above and the better sound system, this is just a generalization) ...plus you say it has "normal door dings". Well, for me, normal should be none.
Let's just say I wouldn't pay $5500 for it. But then again, I wouldn't even be looking at an S. $6200 was a ridiculous asking price...see if you can work him/her lower than $5500.

$6200 is madness for an S with 76K and an auto. Here in MD, $6200 would be low mileage Si or decent VTEC.
For comparison: I bought my 94 Del Sol Si, 5spd, ~73k for $4000.
If the seller is a hardass, he's also a dumbass. If he won't go down, tell him in no uncertain terms that an auto Del Sol S is no treasure of a car, and you'll go elsewhere in search of a better find.

If you plan on doing anything to the car as far as performance, you're kick yourself for buying an auto. And honestly, how much does mileage affect a car? If it was all highway miles (used as a commuter car) then it's nothing. I'd rather have a car that has 200K all highway than a car with 50K all beating on it in the city. The condition of the body and suspension bushings are the biggest things to look at. If the bushings are nasty, chunking apart, or just deteriorating, you'll have some work ahead of you. Engine swaps are way easier on manuals. To give you a reference, I got my 93 S with 150K on it 3 years ago for 4200, and it was in great shape. Owned by an old lady, then a young mother that needed a bigger car. My other sol is a 93 Si with a salvaged title that I got for 2000 and was in great shape, other than it being an auto. It's now a manual, and trust me, it's a pain to do.
