Recommended reading?
Well to start things off, I am not a noob with cars. I've been around cars and mechanics all my life. I do just about everything on my cars with the exception of engine/tranny work. Up until this year all of my experiance has been on domestics (especially General Motors vehicles). I know a far share on frontend, brakes, suspension, and electrical systems, but I would like to learn more about the drivetrain. Eventually I would like to build an all-motor drifter (not in six months, but as a long term goal). I'm well familiar with the candy coated "howthingswork.com" version, I want the meat and potatos of knowledge. So....
Do you have any recommendations on what books I should pick to educate myself on engines and transmissions?
thanks

well thats an obvious one, i already have several, what i'm really looking for is something that explains the theory behind a motor and tranny, i like to understand (or at least have some idea) the reason why i'm doing something to the vehicle, "instead of insert bolt A into nut B". that way if i understand the reason why, i may actually get more out of the parts that i'm working on, than if i just did a "paint by numbers" job. comprendo amigo??

Here, buy these books, read them.
1) Honda & Acura Performance Handbook, by Mike Ancas. MBI Publishing, 1999.
ISBN: 0-7603-0669-9
2) High Perfomance Honda Builder's Handbook, Volume Two, by Joe Pettitt. Car-Tech, Inc, 1999.
ISBN: 1-8840-8938-0
3) Honda / Acura Engine Performanc, by Mike Kojima. PenguinPutnam, 2002.
ISBN: 1-5578-8384-X
Each of these are about $20.00.
Ancas covers the whole spectrum of mods, at the expense of some detail.
Pettitt is very thorough, focusing on chassis setup, functional aero, tire tech and FWD drag performance.
Kojima is one of the best technical writers alive. His book covers every possible motor setup, including hybrids, NA & FI, Nitrous, literally everything. And the info is presented in a truly understandable format.
---
As a favor to me and the other members of HAN, at least look for these at the local library and have a preliminary read, so that we don't feel like we're spoon-feeding answers that are not entirely relevant to vaguely written questions.
Thanks.
Dave.

What kind of drifter were you thinking of?

thanks snoopy,
the drifter i have in mind is based on the 240sx chassis, and i plan on usingthe nissan SR20DET engine, everyone i've talked to has highly recommended this engine for modification. and i'd like to convert the body into a JDM silvia
i have the service manuals for both the engine and the 240sx
and i plan on doing this over the next 10 years so its not incredibly urgent
