if the cap & rotor are worn, you could actually be hearing a spark bridging inside the distributor.

are you sure its from your distributor? because other things click under the hood, such as the injectors which can click pretty loud.

or you may even need a valve adjustment.

I just recently had a clicking noise from the distributor also and when I took off the cap I realized that my wires running to the coil were loose some how. I doubt this is what is wrong with your car but if it happened to me it could happened to others. While in there go ahead and check the cap and rotor and replace an necessary.

i don't think he needs a valve adjustment cause it doesnt sound like the valves. we also put ouer ear up to the ditributer and we are sure its coming from there.

Take off the cap and make sure the rotor is on correctly. Also check to see if the screw backed out accidentally.

I had noise from my 91 distributor and within a week that sucker almost killed my engine. CEL came on, car lost power, backfired, the whole nine. When I took the cap off, I had all kinds of brown dust. The squealing was from the rotor getting slowed as it turns.

I got a used distributor off my parts car and no problems since. By the way, NAPA has the best prices on used distributors--$129 w/ tax for my year. HTH
