Usually there's a popping noise that's detectable. This is a problem on the 6th gen. V-6 Accords, but they all will fail eventually. It's a couple hundred bucks to replace.

I had the one on my Lude engine go bad right after the swap
Luckily I know some people and they hooked me up for free.
Usually the car starts running a little ragged almost like a vacuum leak and it will throw a CEL in most cases but not always.

the plate that connects to the EGR valve on the engine usually gets clogged and needs to be cleaned out. On Hondasociety there are a few DIY's that explain how to clean it out.
