He hit the brakes while the rear was loose (his timing was perfect too h: ). As for how he got the rear loose in the first place, it could be a number of factors.

ummm it's pretty obvious.

he was going to change lanes to the right. saw the car swerved left hit the brakes. then to the swerved to the right again hit the brakes again which caused him to lose traction on the rear, so his rear end goes flying to the right and now the car is pointing left and off he goes.

Typical newbie mistake. Never slam on your brakes and turn at the same time - unless you are a stunt driver

But also could have been bad alignment too. When you lower a car especially a Civic the car toes out. Which means the car will rotate better which is great for autocrossing and road racing, but bad as you can see in the video.

I'd be crapping bricks if I was the guy in the pick-up.

i've done that twice on the same stretch of mountain road... bad bushings, bad tires, bad driving.

Now I keep all my bonehead manouvers to the autocross course. h:

Looks like plain old over-correction to me. Maybe he shouldn't change lanes into people, then he won't have to slam on his brakes and swerve.
