Raiders bench Russell, likely for rest of '09

Quote:
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) - The Oakland Raiders are benching former No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell, handing the starting job to Bruce Gradkowski.

Coach Tom Cable said after practice Wednesday that Gradkowski will get the nod Sunday against Cincinnati. Cable says the plan is for Gradkowski to start the rest of the season. Cable has pulled Russell for ineffectiveness in two of the past three games.

This will be just the second start for Gradkowski since 2006. He started one game last year in Cleveland and 11 games as a rookie for Tampa Bay in 2006. Gradkowski is 17 for 30 for 163 yards and two interceptions.

Russell has completed just 46.8 percent of his passes this season. He has also thrown nine interceptions and lost five fumbles.
What took so Damn Long?

Russell is the perfect example why the rookie contract structure needs to be revamped in the NFL.

He signed a $31.5 million contract GUARANTEED, worth up to $68 million (which he'll obviously never get because he blows chunks).

That amount of money for a complete and utter bust is ridiculous.

exactly. i think it's freaking dumb to see rookies sit out training camp and such for more money. they haven't done anything yet, they don't deserve more money.

Werd. The coaching staff absolutely has not done its job in coaching Russell. Granted, he doesn't have the greatest work ethic, but that comes down to coaching too. He has not improved at all...not learned a thing. The players around him are not great. Get him a few guys, some protection from the o-line, and a coaching staff that will prepare him properly...and he could be ok. He was fine at LSU.

I agree...they need to adopt the NBA salary structure for the first round.

he's also the dumbest NFL QB to ever wear a uniform, I think he scored a 6 or 8 on the wonderlick test. 40 is near perfect and 20 is average. He's got all the physical tools, but he's just a retard that can only throw the ball straight down the middle of the field because his QB vision is non-existant.
