I always loved SIT Powerwounds or DR Hi-Beams. Can be kinda hard to find, though.

There's some string lube that you can use, I have this stuff called Axe Wax, and it's a fretboard / string treatment. It's not really necessary, but really handy if you get alot of sweat and grime into the strings.

Also, make sure to take it to a guitar shop and get a setup (if you can't do it yourself). Should usually run around $20, and worth every penny. Make sure it's a good shop (not guitar center).
