What a difference a clean laptop heatsink fan makes

My laptop's been overheating. Anything like streaming video, running a crappy Java webpage, opening Photoshop, would make the fan run like crazy. A few times it actually shut down because it got too hot. I had to make a custom profile that limits the CPU to 80% load to keep from overheating.

So, I got sick of this and looked up how to access the fan. 5 screws and a little creative prying of an access panel later, and I discovered a totally solid layer of dust blocking any air from moving past the heatsink.

I cleaned the gunk out, put the cover back on, and so far so good. The computer still puts out a fair bit of heat but the difference is now the heat actually goes out thru the heatsink. At least Lenovo was kind enough to include an access panel to the fan....

Same thing happened to me. My computer gets jumpy when playing video and starts turning into a portable heater. I took it apart and cleaned the fan...and put a new layer of compound between it and the CPU...world of a difference

On my Thinkpad, that's because of the wireless card, not the processor.

It's a known problem.
