Speed limit enforced by aircraft

So today I was crusing down the highway doing maybe 2-3 over. I see a cop on the side of the road and he pulls out behind me. I figure he's just done writing up the paperwork from the last guy he pulled over and I keep driving. But he immediately pulled me over and told me that aircraft clocked me doing 72 in a 55 (where the limit drops from 65 to 55) about 2 miles back.

I asked him how that works, and he explained that a plane flying about 1/2 mile up counts the time it takes you to drive between two marks on the road and calculates your speed that way. Then they call down to the car and say "pull over the guy in the red sedan" or whatever.

I always thought those "speed limit enforced by aircraft" signs were just a bunch of BS.

:edit: Forgot to mention, as we were parting ways, my car wouldn't start so I had to ask him to jump me

Seems like that would be extremely easy to beat in court?

I got popped in ohio by air patrol. They used a helicopter. He actually dropped out of the cloud cover when I got pulled over so the cop could point him out to me wned:

It's only 2 points if I pay my ticket on time. The last few times I went to court (some of you may remember the window tint incident), it didn't really get me much and I ended up paying more in court fees. I think I'll just pay it and hope my insurance doesn't catch wind of it.

There is no way your insurance won't catch wind of it.

May as well fight it.

Fighting it isn't going to do anything.

"Only" 2 points?!?! Insurance would butt rape!

I would fight it. I think people have a better chance of winning over this type of ticket than if the officer writing the ticket caught you speeding.

Same defense as asking for calibration logs and verification on radar guns.

I beg to differ Since I joined up with Liberty Mutual about 8 or 9 years ago, I have gotten probably 4 speeding tickets, three "unsafe vehicle" tickets, illegal u-turn and failure to come to a complete stop at a stop sign. My rates have never gone up... in fact they've gone down quite a lot :o

BTW, wtf is wrong with the HAN server?

Be honest - were you doing 72? If so, just take it like a man and realize you got caught this time. I say the only time you should really fight if you absolutely, 100%, didnt do anything stated.

so in other words they use an educated guess to pop you, figuring the time it takes to go between two points from a aircraft way up in the air moving at a speed greater than your own doesnt seem very accurate to me

They have painted marks that they time you from and it has been proven to be very accurate.
At the same time I know several people who have easily fought aircraft tickets.

i'm sure these guys are trained. what's the point of putting up the signs and having speed watched by aircraft if it would never hold up in court

well i'm sure to a point they accurate but i'm just sayin it seems like something that probably could be fought ...

not to mention in times of such govt poverty why are we wasting money on airborne speed patrols aircraft fuel and maintenance is expensive. i highly doubt it pays for itself in the number of speeders caught. nor is it really worth it just to catch people speeding

its not just 2 random object of points... they actually have painted marks on the side of the road. those are spaced out at every 100M count how much time is takes and you got the speed.

I doubt anyone would be trained enough to estimate the speed of a moving car from a plane.

those planes are probably also used for drug crops and such things.

I thought about that too. It was just a regular little cesna type thingy, so it's not crazy expensive. I know helicopters requre like 2 hours of maintenance for every hour of flight time and are horribly inefficient. On the same strip of highway I saw someone else pulled over too, so my guess is when the plane is in the air, they have a pretty constant stream of tickets... maybe 10 per hour. So ten tickets at $170 is $1700 every hour that plane is in the air. I can see that being worth the cost I guess.

The speed limit on that stretch should be 75 anyhow

yea i realize its not like they say hey lets measure from that tree to that rock

there just seems to me to be much more accurate and cost effective ways of monitering speeds.

hell a automated camera would be cheaper by far and just as if not more effective

Those options are being considered in some areas but the legal issues are that a person has the right to face and question their accuser. This is the same argument that is gaining ground with the red light cameras..or at least it was.

if courts were to take that argument seriously then security cameras would be moot as evidence in a criminal trial if that was the only evidence linking a suspect to a crime, no?

i think thats a silly argument, if you busted on camera you busted. if it's clearly your car and you cant prove someone else was driving it take the fine.
