fishing peeps: fishing line question

I'm taking my brothers boat out tomorrow morning to one of my fishing spots by the continental shelf [ probably around 80 miles out ]

I'm spooling some new line into my rods and notice that the line seems weak.
[ its old ]
Is there something out there thats like that spider wire line.

Has the strength say of 30lb test line but the diameter of 12lb test.
Sports Authority for some reason doesnt know what im talking about.

i just dont know of any fishing stores here that carry it.
That and I havent bought fishing line in years. so i dont know whats new out there

Dicks sporting goods?

i bought some red string, it's like spiderwire but i have no clue what it's called. iirc it was 50lb and must've been 12lb size. not sure what kind of reels you're using but if it's baitcaster keep in mind if you birdnest one of those it's pretty unpossible to fix without cutting.

eta: i've seen it in walmart, kmart, etc so i'm sure any place that sells sporting goods should have it but yes, i'm certain dick's would.

Deep sea I would go with a minimum of 30lb braided line and a solid baitcasting reel. From there set your drag to half the lines rated capacity and you should be good as long as you let the fish run itself out, you try bringing him straight in and it will snap easily.

i ended up picking up 30lb test PENN line. Normally 20lb test is .45mm in diameter. This 30lb is .44mm. So this seemed to be close to what i wanted.

Thanks

Straight Trilene?
I would go braided, it works better in the long run.

For baitcasters I load up with spectra then top it off with about 150 yards of monofilament (spectra being about twice the strength of mono... ex: 40lb spectra/20lb mono). Spectra will last for years as long as its packed down tight. Then all you have to do is change out the topshot every few trips. Saves time and money. Albright knot for the spectra to mono connection.

As for brands... for spectra I use spiderwire for under 40lbs, Izorline for anything heavier. For mono I like Pline, Maxima, or if Im lazy Ill go to Big 5 and get Trilene Big Game or Ande. As long as the line hasnt been sitting on the shelves for months.

Old isn't bad in fact once you clean it up a bit it works better than some of the newer stuff.
