10 Year Old Shoots Intruders in Port Allen

http://www.wafb.com/global/story.asp?s=10741492

And it's made the front page of Digg:

http://digg.com/people/Child_shoots_..._home_break_in

PORT ALLEN, LA (WAFB) - A ten-year-old boy left home alone with his sister used his mother's gun to shoot an intruder in the face, police said.

Late Tuesday, West Baton Rouge Parish sheriff's deputies received a call to a Port Allen apartment complex after several shots rang out from inside one of the apartments. "You are out here trying to work and for someone to come and do that and invade your home is very hard," the children's mother said. She asked to not be identified.

Deputies say Dean Favron and Roderick Porter knocked several times on the apartment door. The two young children, a ten-year-old boy and eight-year-old girl, stood on the other side, terrified. "He told his sister to be quiet and seconds later, they started kicking on the door and finally kicked the door in," said Sheriff Mike Cazes. The two children ran to their mother's bedroom closet.

In a panic, the ten-year-old grabbed his mother's gun for protection. "He did what I told him to do. I never told him to get the gun, but thank God he did," she said. Once the two suspects opened the door, threatening the kids, deputies say the boy fired a bullet into the lip of Roderick Porter. The two men were taken to the hospital by a third suspect, who is a 15-year-old juvenile. Once they got to the hospital, they were later arrested. "It's just hard. I don't understand why they would do that. I know they have little brothers and sisters and they wouldn't want anyone to break into their house," said the mother.

Each man is held on $150,000 bond. The juvenile, was taken to a local detention center. One of the suspects, Dean Favron, just finished serving almost seven years in prison for aggravated assault on a Baton Rouge police officer and two carjacking charges. He was released on June 6th.

Both men will appear before a judge next month.

And the child will always live with the pride of knowing that he did what he could to protect his sister.

Oh, are they going to have fun in jail, getting shot by a 10 year old.

who the fuck leaves a 10 year old and an 8 year old alone with a hand gun that doesn't have a trigger lock.

Sorry Spanky but this is wrong on 100 levels. They should send the mother to jail.

why was the kid taken to a juvenile facility? Seems justified to me. If anything I thought they would of arrested the mother for leaving the kids home alone.

Yeah, that would help the kid leave a more productive life. Put him in foster care and lock his mother up for going out and working for a living instead of sitting her lazy ass at home and living off of goverment assistance.

If that gun had been locked up, unloaded, etc those kids may have been killed/kidnapped, etc etc. Would that make you feel better?

not to mention there's no need to lock a gun up if you properly teach your children about the dangers

you teach them not to walk into the street when cars are coming and they get that, you teach them dont stick a finger into a electrical socket and they get that.

you don't have to lock it up if you teach them the dangers and get rid of the mystery around guns. kids play with guns because of the mystery and because someone hid it and said never touch this and didnt show them why they could never touch it or why it was so dangerous. remove the mystery and show them the proper place and time to use one and majority of the time it's never going to be an issue. obviously there is always those certain cases, but theres those cases with adults too

is that really that hard to understand? i mean at 10 we are talking 4th or 5th grade ... these kids are old enough to understand. not old enough to have their own obviously in most cases but def old enough to be aware of the dangers

My brothers, sister and I were left at home when we were 8 and under, and we knew where my dad's guns were. Don't know if we knew how to use it though :o

I could break down a pistol for cleaning and reload ammo at the age of 7. My parents weren't negligent. I credit my dad for instructing me properly.

yes your parents should be arrested if they leave you at 10 to watch an 8 year old while your parents go to work. Yeah you can say all you want that it is education and that you were super fucking sweet but this wouldn't be the same conversation if your little brother blew his fuckin brains out because of an accident.

I'm just going to pretend you aren't even in this thread. Trying to argue with you about gun laws is like trying to describe a sun set to hellen keller without using my hands.

no but I wouldn't trust a 10 year old to watch an 8 year old all day. If it was just the 10 year old at home alone for a bit ok..but to place responsibilty of another child on a 10 year old is fuckin stupid in my book.

You don't agree with my opinion and you can't form a valid counter-argument so you're going to result to insults?

I love how mother fuckers always talk about how I don't listen to people's opinions. That's because every damn time I give mine instead of a decent discussion starting I'm called an idiot, redneck, etc and told it's not worth the argument or something of the likes.

And what does this even have to do with gun laws?

My brothers and sister turned out all fine, we were all left alone all day while my parents went to work. I can remember my oldest being 8 or 9 and we are all a year or two apart.

guns/gun laws, I could be a fucking expert on child development and its roll on gun safety and you would still have some yahoo pistol wielding retort about it so why waste hitting my head against the wall. It's like trying to argue religion, pointless.

difference in philosophy I guess. I don't believe that children should be left alone that young, obviously it worked out for you but I still don't think its right.

I'm on the fence as usual.

I think well educated children can be responsible, but saying "hey I turned out fine" or "I was a well educated smart 10 year old" isn't a good argument for what this particular mother did. Sure, it worked out in your case, but it doesn't always work out. Using the likelihood of a highly unlikely scenario as a basis for allowing a 10 and 8 year old to be home alone with a loaded weapon is faulty in most cases.

Using Jesse as the other end of the conversation doesn't really validate your point. That's like one priest trying to convince another one that Jesus is a swell guy.
