30D v XS

Hey canon folks. So I went to Ritz and see they have a new 30d on clearance for 480+ tax. I really like the "feel" of this body.

I've pretty much got my mind made up, but wanted to see what your thoughts were.

30D - Older, but more robust/bigger/magnesium skeleton/older processor

XS - Newer/plastic/smaller/higher mp and maybe better IQ(but I don't think I'll ever realize it)

Thoughts?

XS is roughly the same price. like 500 ish.

I would sell my XT to cover the difference. You wanna buy it? I'll give it to you cheap with extras.

500-600 will buy a nice prime. i still do fine with my 6mp d70. skip the body and get a new lens instead.

i barely use my XT since i got the 50D - the main difference is the bigger screen. man it helps so much.

I want it mainly for the feel. My hands are a little too big for the XT (if that makes any sense)

It wouldn't be 5-600 cause I'm going to get rid of the XT so whatever the difference would be. I'm not really worried about MP count. In real life they all pretty much take nice pics. I'm not talented enough to take pics that warrant the best.

I guess I'm pretty sold on getting the 30d. It's definitely a conveniece upgrade as opposed to a performance upgrade. All in all, it would maybe be no more than a 300 dollar difference and there arent any lenses that I want in the 300 dollar range. Maybe the next lense I get will be the 70-200L is.

yeah the XT/XTi/XS/XSi bodies are way too small for my hands. with the battery grip, it helps, but the extra thickness of the 30d/40d/50d feels much better...withOUT the grip

i know exactly what you mean. it's one of the reason why I prefer nikon prosumer and up bodies. they are much larger/more comfortable in my hands.

70-200L f4 or 2.8? f4 is just as good imo and much much cheaper (also a lot of people selling f4 to get 2.8, no idea why).

I forgot to mention that my buddy got in on that d200 deal and I got to shoot with it. UGH i hate him so much.

D200+battery grip+sb600+85mm 1.4 = fun fun fun. He also got a lowepro sling bag. I hate him.

well, the faster, the better in low light, and obviously less depth of field. it takes alot more to make a constant 2.8 zoom, and it's reflected in the price.

it's 1/2 a step. F4 is more than enough imo for prosumers. it's not like you can use the 70-200L f/2.8 indoor anyways. even if you were to use it for a indoor basket ball f/4 is fast enough. with the advance in noise levels for higher iso settings, you're better off bumping the iso imo.

my 80-400 is more than enough for outdoor shooting and I can easily use it for basketball games. in those situations what you really want is reach not faster lens.

i almost bought the d200... my d70 was giving a chr error but I cleared it in 5seconds and it never came back mostly happy

Honestly as long as you don't mind dropping the couple hundred bucks difference in upgrading to a new body and it makes you happy then go ahead. But if it were between upgrading the body and getting a new lens, but not both, I'd go for another lens. What lenses do you have right now?

(Btw, fastest lens doesn't necessarily mean best image quality. Actually the faster the max aperture, the more trick the optics have to be to give good IQ.)
