Misc. Honda/Acura: Check CV Boots

1) Lie on your back and slide under the front of the car as far as you can.
2) Using a flashlight or drop light, locate the drive axles: They are
metal shafts that connect to the back of each wheel from the transmission.
3) Visually inspect the rubber boots at each end of both drive axles. You will be inspecting a total of four boots.
4) Look for signs of wear and tear such as rips or cracking.
Feel each boot for indication of leakage - the boots hold thick grease that lubricates the CV joints.
5) Call your mechanic and make an appointment to replace any leaking or torn CV boots. A leaking boot can quickly lose all of the grease and damage your CV Joints.
ps: A torn or ripped CV boot can destroy the CV joint in a matter of days, especially if the weather is wet. Putting off this repair will cost you more in the long run. It is a waste of money to replace the CV boot if the CV joint is already damaged.

my cv boots were torn on my 94 accord for well over a year and i did not have any probles driving. honda made some really good axels. the only annoying thing about it was the loud clicking sound everytime i turned.

That's funny man, that loud clicking you were hearing were the axles slipping. hehehe.
The axles were slipping because you got dirt and grime up in there and it rounded off the ends of your cv's. hehe.
On a side note: Unless the car is near new, have the cv joints replaced anyway. Labor wise- they have to take the cv's completely apart, and it's not cheap, so might as well buy the parts and have them replace those too.
That is, unless the car is less than 5 years old.

it's my D in a B
my friend's '89 civic si has had bad CV joints for almost 3 years now. It clicks and grinds around the corners, but still drives. I think they stop working properly, but never actually die.... thats my theory anyway. His car has nearly 300k miles on it. :exnbp:

yeah, how much would repalcing both axles and/or boots cost? mine on my civic have been torn for about 8 months and i've had no problem with them at all, even with heavy snow and rain...?
