Default do they live up to the hype?

Are you happy w/your s2k? Is it as good a car as you expected? How fast is it and does it handle well?

while it's slower than my last "car" (C5 Corvette)it's not bad at all.. Handling is exemplary, and it has plenty of power for anything I want it to do...

My friend Mike traded in a modded 97 ITR for his new S2K, which he's already done a lot to. His words are:

"The Type R was awesome and everything, but the S2K was just the next step up. A different car altogether, more power, RWD means more getting to the ground."

He obviously doesn't regret it.

Hype? I guess you can say it did, I don't think there are many disappointments with the exception of no low end torque, but after all it still is a 4 banger.

Personally, I would think you have to chock up some of what your friend said to justification of his current car. You see this same habit on most user review websites -- whatever the user currently has is always the best.

As someone who owned and tracked both a ITR and a S2000 at the same time my belief is that overall the ITR is a better and more capable car.

However, I still own the S2000 and don't the ITR. Why? I have a better track car than both now -- and I still enjoy the convertible top of the S2000.

As to the question of "hype" I guess that would have to be better defined before I could comment on it. I will say that the S2000 is not without it's faults (wimpy brakes without better pads, loads of bumpsteer, lots of snap-oversteering tendencies, weak clutches, lot's of driveline lash) -- but it is also a great car to bang around in, very much like a go-kart for the streets, and more often than not it makes me smile.

What track car is that? The S2K is a better handler than the Boxster S and M Roadster

Err --- no --- it is not. Handling is a quasi-defined criteria that differs from person to person. Magazine numbers (which I assume you are using for your comparison here) only show part of the picture -- although even if we stick to those the S2000 is better in only some regards and worse in others according to the magazines.

I use track times from R&T. The S2000 was faster around Buttonwillow (I think that was the track) than both cars and kept tighter lines. They measured it through satellite gps data. I don't use skidpad and lateral g numbers...they are not very telling.
