Default Speedometer problem

Recently my speedometer has been acting up, it will work on and off when I'm driving. All other gauges work fine. Any suggestions on how to fix it?

1997 Honda Accord SE

Thanks!

Check-engine light? It sounds like your VSS but that would set off the CEL.

My check engine light is on but it's giving a P1457 when I got it checked at autozone, something to do with my exhaust.

P1457 is for a leak in the EVAP canister system
That seems completely unrelated to speedometer or VSS.

Look for loose connections at the back of the cluster. If the VSS itself were bad it should set off another code (P0500 for manual trans, P1791 for auto). Since you don't have those, the ECU must be happy with the signal its getting from the VSS.

After ruling out bad wiring, it might be a bad gauge in the cluster.

I noticed whenever the MPH gauge stops working my miles stop ticking too. Will definately check for loose wires. Thanks

IF you're ambitious (& if you're good with a soldering iron), you can remove the cluster & see whether any wiring is accessible or repairable on/in the cluster itself.

I never had to do that, so I cant be much real help...

Just took the gauge cluster out and checked all the wiring. I drove my car around and everything seemed to work fine until I put everything back together and the MPG gauge wasn't working again. Any other suggestions? Thanks

I might be out of my league but i dont' remember ever seeing a MPG on my '94. And i know 94-97 all have the same dash. If your speedometer doesn't move neither does your odometer. The speedometer drives the odo. I'd say your speedometer gauge is bad. It happened on my '94 and i know tons of people who its takin a crap on of those years. If the car drives fine, and you get no code for the VSS its a sure bet your speedometer is crappin out.
