start off by performing a compression test.

pull all the spark plugs when you do it.

Give us more details.
Miles?
What model year?
Service history?

Does the car produce oil smoke when you first start it up after it sits overnight? That is one symptom of worn valve guides.

Next step is a compression test; combined with a leakdown test it will allow you to narrow down which cylinders are in worst shape.

Ultimately, you're looking at a rebuild.

Any mods? I would try checking the PCV valve too.
