That made me think of the old slimjim commercials. "Snap into a Slim Jim!!"
It sounds like the handle mechanism is loose or broken somewhere along the way. I'd remove the interior door panel and diagnose it that way. It would, of course, probably be easier if you could get it open first but I don't have much experience with that.
