Default Timing Belt

I am not seeing comments about timing belts and was wondering what has been the experince of those who either 1) had a belt break or 2) didn't change the belt and went over the recommended miles. Please post your experience if you fall in either of those categories, or have knowledge how critical this issue is. My '98 RL has 98,000 miles so is 10 years old, but the book says to change the belt at 105,000 (?), so wondering how critical this might be. I got a quote from a non-dealer for $825 to replace.

I also have a '98 Acura RL. It's at 115k miles and I'm just about to get a bunch of maintenance things done to it. It's getting
  • Timing belt service
  • Transmission flush and fill (machine flush to completely remove old fluid)
  • Differential fluid change
I'm getting all of this done by a non-dealer for $650. Since it's an interference engine, I'd rather get the timing service done than risk an expensive repair if it were to break.

I'd consider doing it relatively soon as it's not only miles but time that affects belt life. The alternative is not pretty if it does happen to break.

Default Thanks for the advice

I went ahead and replaced the timing belt which is highly recommended since now I'm not thinking about it breaking. Just for the info, I got 3 quotes for replacement: Dealer: $950 After-market Honda Specialist: $750 Moonlighting Acura Mechanic: $650 I went with the middle one!

A timing belt, or cam belt (informal usage) is a part of an internal combustion engine that controls the timing of the engine's valves. Some engines, like the flat-4 Volkswagen air cooled engine, use timing gears. The term "timing belt" is also used for the more general case of any flat belt with integral teeth. Such belts are used for power transmission or to interchange rotary motion and linear motion, where either high loads or maintaining a specific drive ratio are important. A common non-automotive application is in linear positioning systems or bicycle drives.
