so it was 42 this morning.

time to seriously look into some colder weather gear. I picked up a jacket last week cause the local yamaha shop where I get my parts had them on sale. So my head chest and arms were toasty but everything was borderline frostbite. I definetly need some better gloves, I've looked around the web but it so hard to shop for gear online. Any of you guys have gloves that are fairly warm have some sort of integrated knucle guards and don't look like they just came off the race track? I could also use some sort of small windproof scarf. I wear this stuff to work so I am trying to find stuff that looks fairly reasonable.

For gloves I would go to your local store and try shit on. You want those to fit PERFECTLY otherwise it will irritate you. Look into Alpinestars. I have a pair of winter gloves that are VERY warm, but no knuckle protection.

As for the scarf, just put on a bandanna (thief style) and it will help with wind on your neck.

yeah I see guys with the bandanas. It makes me laugh though cause these guys will be out with no helmet in the cold or rain with a bandanna over their face, the glasses and another bandanna over their head.

It's like they are thinking "man if there was just some sort of thing I could put over my whole head to keep the cold and rain out and maybe some sort of window in the front so I can see through it."

I hear ya on the cold weather. Saturday I took a trip to IUP with a friend, and let me tell you how freaking cold it was! Okay well Im not gonna tell you the whole thing but lets just say it LITERALLY took me a full two hours after I got home (including a hot shower) to get my body temperature back to normal. After I get some more money I am definetly getting cold weather gear.

Also.. does a full face keep your face warmer than a 3/4 shell? My lower face is always freezing!

A full face will keep everything but you neck/lower chin warm. Hence the bandanna for your neck.

yeah as long as you don't have to crack the sheild to prevent fogging a full face will keep keep your noggin pretty warm. I'm going by the bike shop wednesday to pick up a master link, I will probably pick up set of gloves while I am there. Hopefully the jacket gloves and the bandana should be enough to get me down to 40 or so. My legs get pretty cold but I don't really see a whole lot I can do about that.

How about a pair of over-pants?

As for protecting the neck, I was wondering if one of these would work:

http://www.summithut.com/catalog/rem...r/1/pfid/2954/

Or

http://www.rei.com/product/659704

or

http://www.rei.com/product/725049

^this one's only $14. I might give it a try.

i was gonna suggest one of those hoods ^^^ you can get a decent neoprene one at a ski shop or someplace like EMS or gander mtn. dicks sporting goods etc.... that will keep you warm if its wet out or from the wind.

i always thought the bandanas were to keep bugs off the face and out of the mouth

yeah I'm trying not to look like a terrorist when I walk into work...

I went to the shop but wasn't really thrilled with what they had. pretty much like any other winter gloves. I did find these on ebay. (Olympia 4370 Cold Throttle glove) Anyone heard of the brand? Pretty much every glove I buy is med so they should fit.

bnuk, ever consider a pair of toasty long johns for yourself? I imagine that would be very warm, you could leave them all day if you wanted or take a backpack to work and change out of them in the bathroom!

good call and cheap!

as for looking like a terrorist, you take the mask off when you take your helmet off
the pants are just over pants so you could also take those off when you get to work. added benefit, you dont smell like motorcycle all day

Olympia makes good quality gear. I have a pair of Olympia overpants that are real solid, and have a removable waterproof/thermal liner that lets me wear them in the cold or the heat. Olympia is really popular among the touring crowd (particularly BMW folk), so I wouldn't hesitate to purchase Olympia gear.

Also, if you get a balaclava (aka terrorist mask) make sure you don't get an all-fleece or all-cotton one. Fleece doesn't block wind very well, and cotton will just get soaked in the wet. Neoprene (at least for the neck area) is the way to go.

when i ride and its cold i wear two sets of pants.

i wear pajama pants under thick jeans.

i wear my Cold Gear under armor. a beater, a long sleeve shirt , thick t shirt, and then leathers.

for my hands i wear my snow boarding gloves cuz they have a pocket for hand warmers. <- hand savers!

i wear a bandanna thief style around my mouth but under my nose.

old navy performance fleece pullover under my jacket was perfect for me. they also make performance fleece pants to wear under your jeans. these items work great cause as it warms up, thet breath real nice so you don't smother...till it gets warm enough to take em off

also look into gettin a blacava from REI or somewhere. put it on under your helmet & then tuck it in your jacket & zip it up tight around your neck.....you'd be amazed how much keeping your exposed neck area warm has to do w/ making cold weather riding bearable

tour master flex, I've been very happy with it. it was on sale so it was 150 after tax. It has two inner removable liners, one water proof, one quilted, so with everything in it is pretty toasty. the outer shell also completely removes so if you wanted you could get it down to just a mesh jacket, but it wasn't warm enough for that. I think I would be perfectly warm down to the low 30s with it. It has pretty large shoulder and upper arm hard armor+pads, elbow and forearm armor+pads, and a back pads that covers the upper spine and the whole lower back. very comfy though.

The gloves I got look like the jacket but i don't like them as much, the fingers are pretty stiff, especially pinky so you have to either let it stick out or it will cramp up after a little while. They are warm though and maybe they just need breaking in.

so with that stuff the only thing still cold is my legs, but when everything else is toasty warm its easy to ignore that. I still may look into some over-pants though.

bnuk, your gloves probably just have to break in. My left pinky was like that too whenever I first had my JR gloves. Now they are perfect.

do you guys use guantlet style for your summer gloves?

Yeah I think I will definetly get some over-pants. I'd let to get some that zip down the sides and have some type of protection over the knees. for now I'm just putting some big cargos over my jeans when it gets below 50.

For warm weather, I use a Tourmaster mesh glove made with a synthetic suede palm. I tuck the glove into my jacket, and then snug it down with the jacket's cuff velcro.

As far as cold weather, the riding season is winding down at my location. It's getting too cold to ride for my noob tastes. 40 degree mornings & less than 40 degree evenings.

I use Cortech Scarab RR gloves for Spring/Summer/Fall riding:

I feel like the gauntlet definitely helps with wrist protection in the event of a crash. These gloves are mostly leather, with some Keprotec panels in between the fingers that allow a little bit of airflow. Even in 90+ degree weather, I never felt like my hands got too hot with them on.

I'm probably going to pick up a pair of Alpinestar Vega Drystar gloves for winter/colder weather. They've got a waterproof membrane and Thinsulate insulation. My hands got a little chilly riding to work this morning with the Cortechs on. Was probably about 40 degrees out.

I use my gauntlets in the summer, they are not at all unbearable, and I feel safer with the added protection.

I'm also thinking about getting this, seems like something built for snowboarders would be good for us. Its like mask for your nose, mouth and neck but according to description it is supposed to keep some of the moisture in the mask so if that works it would help with the fogging as well.
