I'd like to pick one up for photographing various things but I want to find out if they really produce intended results...

They work well. But you need to have the lighting to go with it. You cant stick that tent in a room and expect the pics to come out looking nice.

That would work. If you wanna get crafty, you can build your own. All it takes is a frame made from PVC pipes and some white sheets.

I told Drew about this, and he found a "premade" frame using a laundry basket. Let me get him in this thread :o

Define "various objects"

The biggest issue here is the size of the subject being photographed. The PVC tube method I used was awesome.

I pieced together a ghetto lightbox from Walmart materials.

(1) laundry hamper - $10 - used for the PVC pipe and joint pieces
(1) piece of white cloth - $3 - used as a defuser
(1) pack of GE 100W Reveal bulbs - $3
(2) metallic lamps - $4 ea

The hamper should look something like this:

the setup

the results

before:

after:

There was absolutely no photoshop'ing at all. I used PS to resize the images, but there was no color level fixes or anything.

The camera is a 2005 Cannon SD400, 5.0MP, point and shoot.
