Default is a 96 ex VTEC?

yea iv been lookin on the internet for this question and found on cars.com that it says a 96 civic ex has VTEC but how do you know for sure if it does because on my civic it doesnt have the VTEC stickers on the sides of the car and it doesnt say VTEC on the engine head and i cant seem to find the VTEC sodenoid thats supposibly by the distributer so my question is does it really have VTEC or not? can somebody answer this for me?

Yes, it should be Vtec unless it has been swapped out.

Check for the Vtec Solenoid on the head. Also, I can't recall exactly, but the sparkplugs should be facing away from the firewall. *If it's the other way around, please correct me, I'm a bit rusty. *

EDIT: The EXs didn't have Vtec stickers on them and only handful had the Vtec SOHC valve cover.

It depends on where you live - I couldn't find out if you are from Canada or the US. Canadian EX's are non vtec. American EX = Canadian SI (and I don't beleive there was an EX coupe made in Canada - just EX sedan). Another simple check would be to check the engine code on the block, very few people would swap out a vtec head for a non-vtec head. Block codes are:
D16Y8 - vtec
D16Y7 - non vtec

some d16y8's as said above didnt say VTEC on them. If it is a US EX, than it is a SOHC VTEC motor

I don't think any of the 96+ EXs said VTEC on the valve cover. Just the 92-95 gen. The D16Y5-7-8 all had the spark plugs facing toward the front of the car also.
