rear quarter panle removal

my 92 vig has major rust on the lower part of the rear quarter panels. i could weld/bondo it up but i want it done right. a local body shop told me it would cost me about $3500 to fix the right way. He told me that i could take it to another body shop and get it fixed for about 1000, but that it would look exactly the way it does now in a few months or years. i found new panels online at trademotion.com. I have never worked with them before, anybody have any input on them?

My question is how hard is it to remove the rear quarter panels? If i can do it my self i would like to. I’m sure most of that $3500 is labor. Looking at the diagram they have online, it looks like the panel goes to the front door jam. I thought it went about half way up the rear pillar but i was wrong. I'm guessing there are spot welds along the seams? Or is it just glued in there with pop rivets. If i called a acura dealer could they tell me how to take it off with out buying a fleet of RLs or RDXs?

Replacing a rear quarter panel is a major job. Don't forget after replacing the quarter panel, the shop will have to blend with all the adjacent panel to color match it, plus clear coat them all. $3500 does seem a little high, but you are not far off.

well the car is in primer grey right now. don't know which owner along the line painted it grey so matching paint wont be a problem. i just talked to a guy here at work and he said that if the car is put together with panels, then i will need to brace the car with braces and then remove the panels or the car will probably flex and my alignment will be off.

$3500 is what I paid to have mine done recently. It's a huge job, about 7.5 hours of labor each side.

7.5 hours each side? thats not as bad as what the guy told me at the body shop. he told me it might take him 20-25 hours to get them off, and another 20-25 to put the new ones on. i thought that was a little long. id like to do it myself. im going to read up on the subject as much as possible before i make my decision. but i dont know who i can ask. i thought about calling the closest acura dealership but im sure i will have to buy something from them to get a answer.

what car do you have AF? was rust your problem? do you have pictures from the job? i need all the help in the world.

You have to be a pretty good welder if you want to attempt to do this on your own. Calling Acura dealer isn't going to help you as they do not have a body shop, they always refer you to a body shop "they" work with. Just call some reputable shops around your area and get a quote. Most shops will give you a free estimate without you buying something. Shops will give you a list of all the parts that you will need and they labor hours.

Yeah... the rear quarter panels are a structural peice, unlike the front fenders, so it's going to be alot of labor, which equals a lot of $$
