Default why do imports have expensive timing belts?

just curious why honda (and other imports) got a timing belt instead of a timing chain. It only costs a few bucks more to install and doesnt need changing, like those cheap belts that can set you back 800 smackers when it needs changing. Makes no sense at all.

The belts are cheap, like 40-50 bucks all day long.

The labor to change them is expensive

I work at BorgWarner, which is a timing chain company. Actually, a lot of imports now are switching to chains. Nissan has used chains in their 4 cylinders for years. Honda's K and R series engines are chains. The problem with a chain system is that they can be noisier than belts and require a lot more R&D to reduce NVH than belts do. Chains are much more expensive than belts, and chain timing systems are about 5 times more complicated and expensive than belt timing systems for a manufacturer.

Basically, it's a cost issue. R&D is the biggest cost. I can't tell you how many hours have been put into quieting down the chain system on Hyundai's new Lambda V6 engines...it's way over 1000, not to mention the cost of many many dyno sessions. Nissan's VQ35 timing chain system is probably about 5-6 times more expensive than Honda's J series belt system.
