Default Loud thumping/knocking noise when braking

Everytime I go to brake to come to a stop, I hear a loud thumping, like a loud knocking, noise coming from the front of the car. It's not consistent to the point where it will happen all the time to where you can guess it's next knock. I don't believe it has anything to do with the rotors because braking is smooth. Only problem is the loud thump/knocking noise.

I removed the lower ball joints a few weeks ago to replace my transmission, and reinstalled them like normal. Could one of the LBJs be producing this noise?

I also removed my traction control bar thinking that was the source, but it wasn't.

Any suggestions?

Is it a constant thumping when you are braking? Or just one thump?

Not constant in terms where every 2 seconds it happens, but yes, there are more than one 'thump' when braking.

Could be:

warped rotors
cv joints going bad
wheel bearings?

Does it only happen when you're going slow and almost at a complete stop? That could be a sign of severly warped rotors. Also test your CV joints. Take a left and right hand turn slowly and then reverse while turning left and right.

Did the thumping occur before you redid your LBJs?

warped rotors- i don't think so, because braking is smooth. i just hear loud thumps.
cv joints bad- possibly
wheel bearings- i don't think so either, otherwise i'd hear noise when going driving and not just when braking.

Since it happens when braking, I am going slower than usual, but not to the point where I'm completely stopped. It doesn't "feel" like warped rotors. I know how those "feel."

Testing my CV joints only requires me to "Take a left and right hand turn slowly and then reverse while turning left and right"? Should I be braking at all during this time, or just driving normally? Slowly?

Couldn't tell you. The first time I replaced my transmission was well over a couple months ago. We fixed my old tranny and put it back in about 3 weeks ago. Too far back for me to remember such a noise.

Where is the noise coming from? Front of back of car?

Sure you don't just loose shit flying around in your trunk? :chuckles:
