Default High Mileage oils:

such as Valvoline Synthetic Max Life what do you think...

better for cars with the high miles or just a gimmic?

I just use OEM fluid even though I'm nearly at 170K miles, and I'm fine

Without independent proofof their claims, it's a gimmick.

My general recommendation:
Use the factory recommended oil weight and use a quality brand of oil filter (i.e.,not FRAM).
Change the oil regularly and make sure the engine has sufficient quantity of oil in between changes. Follow the recommended service intervals in the owner's manual.

i personally work an penz oil and laugh every time a poor soul spends 10-20 extra on an oil change. in fact ill laugh right now ha ha.
