I think it's so they don't break if they get hit by stones or debris?

At those speeds, debris can be very dangerous.

it's mostly for if you bump the car in front of you (sometimes there is a matter of inches when following someone in order to do a pass) the plastic shards do not come off and get on the track

The tape is so that rocks and such don't shatter your headlights and pop someone's tire. Most DOT racing tires have no steel belts to protect them from sharp objects.

Plus you don't want to be the one that is responsible for stopping the session everyone is running in. They have to make everyone stop or exit the track and that's it for your track session. Not a good way to make friends

Where'd you hear that one? There is no bumping/door pounding allowed. If you do that you get kicked out, bye bye - done....

the tape is there for the precaution if someone bumps or hits something or throws up a rock at the car behind...they don't allow bumping...however if you watch the speedvision cars...its like a crash derby at some races

i like having the headlights untaped so i can flash the guy behind to get his attention if he doesn't give me room to pass

Have you ever done a track day? If you get bumped by someone that guy gets thrown out. If you bump someone you get thrown out. We are talking about taking our daily drivers out on course. I can see the competition school where guys have specific cars for racing. You definitely been watching too much tv.

If you flash the car infront of you with your headlights you're going back to the classroom. Cause if you are overtaking a car, the guy infront of you must signal you to pass. If the guy infront is unsure whether to let you pass then you be patient OR pull into the pits and let everyone go ahead.

Don't post things if you don't know what you are talking about please.

obviously you haven't carefully read my posts...the tape is there for a precaution in case someone bumps or gets a rock in the headlights...please notice where i said [the schools]they don't allow bumping...please read my posts before replying...yes you are correct that the driving schools DO NOT allow bumping and only allow passing in certain areas...don't know how many schools you've been to but you are kicked out when you act in an unprofessional manner...i.e. passing without a signal, dangerous behavior, ignoring flags, etc.

as for flashing lights...an instructor of mine who had over 2 decades of w2w racing experience had schools that allowed headlight signalling...its main reason was to signal your intent that you are faster than the car in front of you and they should let you by when it is safe (where passing is allowed)...the main reason was b/c some students don't look in the mirrors and neither do their instructors...this is stuff i've researched and prepared in a report

oh btw...you can email me at my other address... mailto:nasa_racers@yahoo.com where i am the marketing / pr specialist of nasa pro racing and the USTCC

Ok I misunderstood you. From the way you were writing that post you made it seem like it happens (bumping).

Our NASA classroom instructor for our classes told us there is NO FLASHING OF HEADLIGHTS if you want to take over the car infront of you. He told us if they don't let us pass we either just deal with it or pull into the grid, wait for the pack to go by and then go back out when safe.

Again I apologize. Didn't want any newbies getting the wrong idea.
