Default proper torque for crankshaft pulley bolt

Hi all,

I am confused about the proper torque of the crankshaft pulley bolt on a 96 d16y8 . The Haynes manual says it should be 130 lb ft, but the Helms says 20Nm or 14 lb ft. That is a huge difference. 14 lb ft seems incorrect, but this is the more official Helms manual....is it a misprint ?

I am afraid of breaking the bolt by applying too much torque....thanks for any help....

120-130 is about right. BTW how did you get yours off? I can't get it off with an impact wrench (@100 psi) or a breaker bar on the ground and hitting the crank.

thanks. I used the special tool that I bought from amazon.com for $25. I am sure you have seen this ....it basically holds the pulley still while you loosen the bolt. I didn't have to use a breaker bar...maybe I was just lucky.

I bought one of the moroso crank pulley tools and I've been happy with it. You can also try to shove something into the flywheel teeth on the other side but that never works for me.

135 ft/lbs is the number I remeber. The 14 is probably the spec for the plastic cover over that goes over the belt (or more accurately the bolts that hold that cover).

I guess the Helms was correct...it says tighten it to 14 ft lbs....+ 90 degrees...so that should equal 130 ft lbs I guess...I only focused on the numbers and neglected reading the '+90 degrees'...
