Welcome to the boards.

On the upper right is a serach button. There have been many oil discussions in the past. Im sure you'll find a ton of info.

On a car with 165k, Id use any high mileage formulation from Valvoline, etc, and a good quality filter (purolator pure one), and continue to change it at routine intervals.

I always used Mobile 1 it made the car run so much better and cooler IMO. I love the oil personally a little pricey but dfinitely worth every penny

Anyone trying out those new oils... the ones that you don't have to change for up 15K miles???? Sounds interesting. I think that are from Mobil 1. I'm not sure though, I saw a commercial for them this weekend, and am interested.

I use AMSOIL Full Synthetic. I go the 7,500 between changes. It is available in 5W-20.

Here's a tip with Synthetic. If you have a leak, a drip, seepage of ANY kind, Synthetic will make it worse. I speak from experience. Even on my motorcycle, if I have any type of Dino oil seeping, Synthetic will be twice as bad, as it really flows.

Don’t let this deter you from using Synthetic, just be aware.

If you sign up for Amsoil’s “Preferred Customer” plan (I think I pay $20 a year) you get a hell of a discount. And with the cars and motorcycles I use it in, it pays for itself.

The most expensive isn't necessarily the best............i use wal-mart oil in my daily driver civic..........and the others get mobil 1 synthetic............i went to wyotech and they showed us tests of all the oils on normal cars.........obviously sports cars it would differ..........but for most cars the wal-mart brand had the best results

I don't trust an olil that you don't have to change for 7500 miles. I don't care if it says that or not, every 3000 miles is the way to go. Esp. in high milage engines. Heres a tip. This works on old muscle cars but i haven't tried it on anything new. Drain you oil then put tranny fluid in the engine and let it run for five minutes. Drain out the tranny fluid and you'll have cleaner insides. Sinced tranny fluid is oil that is thinner and as a detergent in it to kee your tranny clean, it cleans out the inside of your engine. Now don't try it on a new car you drive all over. Get a junk new car that has a running enegine in it and test it out. The tranny fluid might mess up engine internals in these newer cars.

If I chaned every 3000, I'd be doing it every couple of weeks.

The factory reccomendation is 7,500 without any special oil. Personally I use AMSOIL XL7500. I trust it. I would do the same if I used Mobil 1 5W20 but it's a few bux more a qt. so I use the AMSOIL. I have had oil analysis before and it was fine at 7,500.

And the new 4 Cyl reccomendation is 10K !

Of course do what makes you feel good.

Think how dirty your engine gets in 3000 miles. I drive on country roads and my engine oil is pretty black wheni change it. The more regular the oil change the better your engine will last. And i suggect buying high millage oil nd change every three thousand miles.

That's what a GOOD oil filter is for!
