Strange noise when changing gear

Same applies - apologies if this has already been mentioned but...
Whenever I change gear, I can hear a strange sound that I can only think is related to the clutch.
If I lift the clutch up really quickly, I don't hear the noise. If i bring it up slowly I get a growling / grinding noise. I've never had a VTEC engine before, but all my other cars (TT, S3 for example) don't have this 'characteristic'
It sounds like the gears aren't catching or something. Has anyone had this before? Is it serious?
Not sure if the above makes sense, but I can't think of how else to describe it!
