Default Honda Accord Won't Start

Ok guys, here's hoping someone can solve this one.

I've got a 1994 Honda Accord, 4 door saloon, petrol, manual with about 86000 miles on the clock. Just around December it failed to start first time, this happened twice in about 3 weeks. No big deal I figure and after cranking the engine for a couple of minutes it started OK. Then a month later it refused to start. Cranked over fine, but just wouldn't go.

Ok, so having replaced the battery and spark plugs, and checked the main relay (a common problem according to the internet forums - which seemed OK), tested compression it still wouldn't start. Then one last attempt starting it with my foot on the gas and it fired up. It ran for one journey but was misfiring at low speed. Then it packed up again. After a few days it ran, perfectly no misfiring or anything, then after one night left on he drive it stopped functioning again.

Further tests:

Fuel is being pumped to the fuel rail.
Removing the fuel rail and testing for fuel coming out of the injectors showed that these were good.
After continual cranking you can even smell fuel if you stick your nose down the exhaust pipe.
The plugs (brand new) are sparking fine.
Compression tests show compression is fine too.
The Electronic control unit has been pulled out and swapped with 2 others...from working Hondas. No joy.
Distributor has been replaced with one from a working Honda

Ok so assuming we've got sparks, fuel and compression it should all be working right? Wrong. It cranks just fine but still won't start.

The Cam Belt cover was also removed to make sure that the notch that showed the timing belt was in alignment was where it should be, and this looked good too.

The main relay hasn't been replaced but the main relay controls power to the fuel pump and ECU and the fuel pump works fine so it can't be that? can it.

Does anyone have any suggestions what to do next????

I'm stumped.

Sounds like it's getting spark, it's getting fuel... so it must not be getting enough air. Sounds dumb but have you checked the air filter? Try cleaning the throttle body. There are lots of little air ports in it that can get clogged whcih control airflow at low RPM's and idle.

Is the check engine light on? It could also be a the crank positon, or throttle positon sensor or some other critical sensor. There's also Air temp, manifold pressure and O2 sensor.

Thanks for that, hadn't checked the air filter but it looks fine doesn't seem to be clogged. Would the sensors stop the engine completely if there was a spark, fuel/air present. Don't even get a cough, or a splutter.
