Default S2000 Problems?

Today, my Dad and I looked at the our first used S2000. The rear tires were worn to slicks, and the fronts still had some tread left. I know that the tires wear out quickly, but is it common for them to be worn down that low already?

Also, is there anything else we need to look for, like problems with the 02-03 years. I know that the 00's had a few problems, is it the same with the 02-03's?

Finally, does anyone run synthetic oil in there s2000. I called the dealer to get prices for tires, and i asked them what an oil change would cost, just to get an idea about how much normal service would cost. The dealer told me that an oil change would only be 38 dollars, because synthetic oil is not used. Should synthetic oil be used to prolong the life of the engine?

Any feedback is great, because we want to get an s2000 as soon as possible.

The main problem is people getting agressive down shifting and bending or breaking the valves. We have seen bad clutches and shift syncros. Thats about it. Yes the factory rear tires are soft and last about 10k-15k miles.

It's a good idea to switch to Synthetic after 10k miles. Do it yourself, bond with the car and save a lot of money, use the proper (there is a wrong one) OEM oil filter.

Yes, you will be replacing your rear tires about twice as much as your fronts. I wouldn't suggest using your dealer for anything past purchasing the car. Stock S02's or S03's are what really works best but expect to spend about $150-$200/tire on them.

By mid-02 pretty much all of the minor problems from the first 2 years had been corrected.

Good Luck

I think that he means downshifting and over reving the engine, but i'm not exactly sure.

I think that's exactly what he means. This car was designed to be driven HARD. There is a rev-limiter to protect you up shifting but people have been known to downshift into the wrong gear and for that there is no rev-limiter.

Why ? I know I'm very very busy a lot of the time and don't have a ton of time to devote to things like that. I change the oil myself on my supra and s2000 but i usually have someone else do my civic just cause its a hassle........
