5W-20 or 0W-30?
Hi,
I just got 05 Accord LX 4 cylynder (USA). The manual specifies that engine oil to be used should be 5W-20. However, some of my friends claim that Honda switched to this oil just to improve fule economy (lighter oil - less drag etc.) but that this (5W-20) oil will not trully protect the engine in the long run as much as lets say 0W-30.
My question is - if I now (500 miles into this news car) switch and use synthetic (Mobil1) 0W-30 is that ok? Can it negatively affect the engine? (Because there are some others who say that this engine is "high revolutions" engine that that that is why a lighter oil is necessary).
Thanks and seasons greetings from NJ, USA.

Relevance is irrelevant
Well lighter oils are necessary on Honda engines because of the high revs. I guess I got so used to our Honda engines calling for 5W-30 that I never thought about the two you mentioned.
However I'm pretty sure following the manual this early in the game is one of the best things you can do. I wouldn't change the oil until it's closer to it's first scheduled interval and I would just stick with the manual for now.
Personally I just go with my gut. :bigok:

Factory specified 5W20 is the way to go.
0W30 will provide less protection when cold (it will act like a zero weight) and cause more drag at operating temperature (when it acts like a 30 weight.)
