Tire size question

I have 17x7 inch rims with a 215 45 tire size. How do I go about switching to a 40 series(i prefer a lower profile tire), or can I without going 18s? Can i go 215 40? Or if I go 205 40 what differences would it make in driving performance if any.

Just remember, you have to keep the overall diameter of the wheel as close to stock as possible. While you can go to a lower profile tire, you will have to compensate it and get wider tires so the overall size is the same. If you don't, your speedometer will be off. Go to www.tirerack.com and read up on tire size difference.

Ouch! According to the graph the closest possible combination to stock is 245/40-17...Is that possible for the vigor to go that wide? Would that look ridiculous?

I think you will need to get 18s if you want 40 serie tires.

It throws your speedometer off a tad but not much. 245's are likely to be too wide...I'm at 215 and at a 2.3" drop I barely clear when turning.

So are you at 215-40-17? What about safety wise is it dangerous? I asked the guy at tirerack and he said being that the car is apretty decnt size it might not carry the load well enough....
