Default 1998 Accord Check Engine Problem

I have a 1998 Accord LX 4 Cyl. The "check engine" light came last week, took it to the dealer and he said there was some problem (I don't remember the code) with 3rd/4th gear shifting, fixed it and charged me $85. The "check engine" light came back again next day (last Friday), so I took it back to him. Now he says it's a different problem (different code from last time) and now the problem is related to some kind of valve related to Fuel (burnt vs. unburnt) that's not functioning now and that it will cost be $700 to get it fixed..He is saying it's because of rust/corrosion etc. that has built up over the years.

NEED HELP.....Please advise if this is something that would cost $700 to fix. I called a few places (not dealers) but they wouldn't touch an import.. Please help....

Thanks in advance.....

$700 to replace a $12 part that is easily popped out of the valve cover and put back in? That's not right, does your vehicle ride rough and idle like crap? You sure it isn't something else, otherwise if that indeed is the problem, someone is making you bend over and they are cramming something so far up your hiney, you can taste it...in other words, that's way too much money for a PCV replacement.

Look below...see part #7, that's your PCV valve, you can replace that yourself, simply take off the top hose (usually just squeeze the clamp with vice grips, slide the clamp up) take off the hose, then just take out the valve with your hand (yes that easy), and pop a new one back in.

CVS? hmm...still need more info, what does it stand for.

Do you mean Cannister Vent Shut valve?

If that's the case, it's still way overpriced, the part is only like $50, see if you can do yourself, there might be a TSB out for it. If not, find a different mechanic to do it, should only charge you like 2-3 hours labor rate (depending on location and how much crap the mechanic has to remove to get to it).

Go to the dealer and have him (or her) print out these TSB for ya and see if you can do it yourself:

1) 03-001, JAN 03, Emissions/Engine Controls - MIL ON/DTC P1457 (EVAP)
2) 01-011, MAR 01, MIL ON - DTC P1457 Set
3) 99-075, OCT 99, Updated Troubleshooting - DTCs P1456 and P1457
4) 99-074, AUG 99, Troubleshooting DTCs - P1456 & P1457
5) 98-045, JUN 98, DTC P1456 & P1457 - Troubleshooting Update

Thanks..I think that's it..Cannister Vent Shut Valve..'cos the dealer mentioned to me that he may hv to replace the cannister too..

However, I tried to find more details about this check engine problem.. It seems that it's a very common problem w/'98 & newer Accords.

Thanks for your tips!!

why didn't you just use a paper clip and read the code yourself to see what it was instead of getting bent over by the dealership? its real easy to do.
