What are the differences between the H22a and the type S? Just out of curiousity.

edit: Beside the 20 HP difference.(before I get any "smart" remarks )

Like you said, beside the more sporty cam and 20 hp, the type-S also has 11:1 compression and the h22a has 10.6:1. The type-S also comes ported and polished from Honda. Those are the only differences I can think of.

How does anyone justify the hugh price differences between these just because of a different cam and port & polish? :wtf:

dont forget the pistons

i can build a type-s out of an h22a, best of both worlds...closed deck and OBD1 for cheaper than a OBD2 type-s motor.

open deck is on 97-01 USDM h22a4 models.
it basically has sleeve like tubes for the cylinders, with direct coolant head contact via the block.
closed deck is 93-96 USDM h22a1 models, and 92-98 jdm h22a motors.

So what are the differences between the H22a1 and the H22a? JUST THE BLOCK! I am thinking I want to start with just a block and build it up piece by piece as I get the money. Any other suggestions would be cool to.

a block from a running engine is your best bet, not some block some1 wants to sell you.

the h22a and h22a1 are the same block for the most part, both closed deck. the newer OBD2 motors are open deck.

you should buy a motor from an importer and tear it down, then build it to your specs/liking. ive done this several times, and its like second nature from me now, but if you want to be like me, start where i started...with the 1400 page helms manual for a 1994 USDM prelude.

worth every penny i paid for it ($92)

lol, but you don't need to buy a helms too, ludeboom can be your personal service manual. Second nature, jeez, if only I were as gifted as you master yoda.

Rarity. The Type-S engine is less common, so it costs more.

Same deal with the B18C and the B18C Type-R. The price difference isn't worth the gain, it's just rarer and in higher demand.
