Default Alternator

Is it more accurate to have the alternator checked while in or out of vehicle? I had to remove my brake master cylinder to get the alternator out. I put in the new (well used, but new to my car) alternator and started it up (with a new battery) without reinstalling the master cylinder just in case. Unfortunatly, my charging light came on after a minute or two. I don't want to reinstall the MC and bleed, only to find that the new alternator is shot, and have to take it all apart and repeat. Where/how can I get it tested now that it is removed from the car?

Wow, I really thought someone would know something about this. I decided to forgo testing it, and swapped it out for a new (used) one. Now it works!!!!!
