Default What could be causes of check engine light staying on?

hi,
i recently purchased a 1998 civic lx and after like 2 weeks of driving it my check engine light came on and staying on now... What could this be? I no its not the gas because im putting 87 octane in it... give me some feedback

Get a manual for your car, learn how to use the diagnostic port and read the error code you get.

I'd say do like firebane said and get a manual, but the most common things are either a clogged catalytic converter, or a bad EGR valve (usually just needs cleaning).

where could i get a manual? do any of you guys have one for sale? So is catalytic converter is clogged then i would need to replace o2 sensor? would an o2 sensor be the cause of this? How easy is it for egr valve to be fixed?

o2 sensor could be a problem but there are lots of things that could make it come on ur probly gonna have to check for codes

My guess would be find the code, then check that area... if that's not the problem then the 02 sensor may be faulty.

does the car have any airflow or fuel mods? If so, it could be your MAP sensor. I've already gone through 3 on my 00 EX.
