What could be the solution to gears not going into first or reverse sometimes?
i own a 1998 honda civic lx. When i try to reverse sometimes i push in my clutch and then i try to shift to reverse but it will go about half way. What can this be? It does the same thing in first.... I let a friend of mine drive it and he said nothing is wrong with car..... A friend of mine told me it might be doing this if a new clutch was put in.... Im not sure how new it is. I just bought this car. ... I would like any feedback that i can get from you more expierienced civic drivers....

All it is , is a safety function ,since the civic does not have a realease button or lever (some cars you push down on the shifter to put it in reverse some you have to pull up) it just for those smart people who think R is for Race and will try to shift into reverse while going 70 miles an hour! all you need to do is pull i lil bit forward then put it in reverse. come to a complete stop first!!

simply put the car back in neutral, pick the clutch all the way up, take your foot off for 1 second. put the clutch in and gently slip into reverse. if that doesn't work let off the brake and let the car roll about 1/2 inch. as for 1st, sometimes it's easier to hit 2nd, then 1st. also make sure you have fresh tranny fluid in there, of course!

Yup on older Civics and some new ones the syncros do not line up right. It's a Honda thing. Just put it into 1st to line up the syncros then try reverse or vice versa.

after you put it in first it helps if you pick up the clutch when in neutral before you try to go to reverse again.
dank - there's nothing wrong with the car, that's just how manual trannies are.

Normal behavior when sitting still.
If you're moving and 2-5 give you trouble when shifting, then you have a problem. #1 and #R also do not have synchros. Just between 2-5.

Nah. Go 15mph and try to downshift to first without touching the gas. You'll see. The owners manual tells you not to downshift to first. If it had a synchro, it would match gearshaft speeds and let you shift in while moving.

Alright, I guess hondas dont then, but I know what the syncros do, and I could downshift to 1st in my Nissan, just like any other gear. Intresting, thanks for that bit of information, haha, just something more to look out for when I convert mine.
