Default tire question (possibly a dumb one)

ok so I have an old set of rims in the garage that I'm planning to put on the wifes car, but they need new tires. they used to have 205-40s on them but I"m wondering if I can put on a different size, something a little thicker for her, like 215-45s or 225-45s. does it matter if I switch up all the numbers as long as I stay in the 17" range? hell for that matter would a 50 series tires still fit? BTW she has a 03 civic ex coupe

anyway thats all, maybe dumb, but whatever,

45's might be stretching it...depends if the the car is lowered. A 205/40 is the correct size for 17s on a civic. $40's wont do much in the snow. why dont you put winter tires on the stock rims that are on the car now. then come summer put 40 series tires on the old set of rims for the summer.

If you want a little more sidewall from 205/40/17, then you could either go with 215/40 or 205/45.

thanks again for the info, oh , and yeah this probly wouldn't be happening till spring anyway, the winters in st louis are teh suck.

actually on 7th gen civics. i've come to the conclusion that they may need a higher profile tire like 205/45/17
the stock tire size on a 7th gen civic with si rims is 190/65/15!!! (or something close to that)

i found this out after trying to figure out why his drop was the same as mine but his rubbed alot on his 6th gen ex

Yeah, the stock rubber sizes on the 7th gen civics are quite larger than what were used to. I know that he could probably stick a huge tire under there, despite being 17's, but the speedo is gonna be so off. Trying to suggest a size that is both comfortable to ride in and won't throw off the speedometer as much.

I have 215/40/17 and I think they are a lil too wide. They rub a big cause the side walls are just eakin into the fender well. If I could do it again I would have gone 205...well if I could do it again I wouldnt get 17's..
