detonation/ping
Ok, i have searched extensively and i am dying for an answer.
What is the difference between detonation/knock/ping?
Because my car is making this sound, really hard to describe. Its kinda like gurgling type noise on the offbeat of the engine combustion. Its not metallic, its not that loud, but its there and it sounds weird. I tend to think its detonation or ping. Its mostly under load, up hills, pushing lower gears, etc.
Can anyone definitively describe the sound of detonation or ping? even better, does anyone have a sound file of it? I can try to record a sound from my car, but it would be hard.
Any suggestions on further determining this noise?
thanks!

i don't know what noise you are trying to describe, but i'd fill your car up with some premium gas. If that doesn't fix the problem then maybe you need to get your valves adjusted.

Lol makes your car sound like an old volvo? You hear it in high RPM's ONLY when you are touching the gas? but not when coasting... and like only when accelerating.
It's like an air type sound but not quite a hiss and not quite metal?

its not an exhaust leak, and i just did a valve adjustment myself. Of course, that could be the problem, lol but i doubt it. Could this be caused if i tightened my valves too much?

I haven't found out the reason yet either... I took my front off the ground and I don't hear it at all, I'm not hearing it in park, neutral or reverse...so I'm not sure.... I doubt it's cause of your valvue adjustment...
I tried to start the car on a cold day and immediately put it drive and had the e-brake up ( I have an auto of course ) cause i think you can fadely hear it before the car warms up...it sounds like it's coming from the driver side engine bay like down past the cam sprocket close to the alt.

found the reason yet Yea?
i put 91 octane gas in it a few times, and it actually did go away a bit, much smoother and quieter. does that mean its ping? or knock? What does that mean, i need to retard timing or what?
heres what im thinking could help:
new knock sensor
retard timing a bit
keep running 91 octane (not preferable)
gas pump is out/injectors are messed up
excessive carbon build up?
anyone know anything about what might help? how do i tell if my knock sensor isnt functioning properly?

It costs about $4. Can't hurt to try. :dunno:
Also, I wouldn't retard timing. I'd just make sure that the timing is correct for the engine.
