I lived there in the 70's for a few years and although I was very young I remember it being very alive a vibrant. the people were very nice although like anywhere you have your assholes.
Then they had an attempted invasion by the Russians and the country has been in severe turmoil ever since with various factions trying to take over, never having rebuilt the towns and cities (funding from the US ended as soon as the war did), but the people continued on and are surviving with no real national product to back any sort of growth...so I would say they are doing pretty damned good honestly.
