tl type s sequential automatic RECALL

i just thought i'd give you owners a heads up

i read in the los angeles times that tl transmissions seem to have a bearing that breaks down sending metal shavings through the transmission making it suddenly downshift from 5th to 2nd.

this is potentially dangerous (the person that it happened to was on the freeway) and its happened to a little more than 1% of tl owners if i'm not mistaken.

i suggest you get on the phone with your local dealers for more info. good luck

I've read the article also, but it said nothing about a recall, not even a bulletin. There's really nothing an owner can do if it's not issued, as far as the phone call, Acura will just tell you to bring it in if the problem occurs..........don't waste your time.

If you have not already heard, Honda/Acura will extend the transmission warranty to 7yrs/100,000miles for 2000 and up TL and 2001 and up CL and some other V6 Honda trannys.

1.6% is nothing to get in a panic about. 1.6% of all Honda'sand Acura's. Not 1.6% of Acura's. I can see it now, people flocking to the dealerships wanting a new transmission.

Well, I am living proff that there is a problem. I just brought my 3.2 TL Type s to the dealership for a new transmission. The car has 25,000 miles on it. The problem is severe. I had to drive about 15 miles when the tranny went to get it to the dealership. They looked at it immediately and told me the problem. The real problem is that the transmissions are on backorder for 2-3 weeks and I have to drive a Chevy Tracker in the meantime!!!!

Damn, a Tracker huh, that sucks. At least they didn't give you a Geo Metro.

2-3 week back order? Where are you located as there is no such thing right now. Transmissions take 3-4 days to get in. Me thinks the dealer is pulling your leg.

My guess is that since that article came out, alot of car owners are probably bringing in their cars to the dealership for potential bad trannys and the dealerships probably did find alot of bad trannys, hence, the back order.

I appreciate your looking into the back-order fiasco. I'm not sure if anyone out there knows any of the specifics of the tranny problem. As I was driving, my check engine, VSA light and the explination point light all went on and stayed on. Is this normal??!?!?

It is not normal, I believe it is an indication that your tranny is gone.

Ok there is no national back order. Sometimes they may be short on transmissions as they are rebuilt units. Yes sometimes it may take 2-3 weeks, but ACURA takes care of its car better than any other maker out there. It also shows they are willing to take care of us becuase of the voluntary extending of warranties. I think this shows that even if you have a transmission issue, You have nothing to worry about as it will get repaired for free. Keep in mind you should not ignore your transmission by never gettting it serviced.

Just a little update on my issue. Somehow, they managed to get a tranny yesterday and had my car done this morning. I guess if they want to, they can do this A.S.A.P. The service department at my dealer was awesome to deal with. Thanks for all your responses.

This problem has been known for a long time with the 1999 3.2 TL's. I think it is an injustice to ignore the 1999 models!

haha... what's the difference? 1.6% of both Hondas and Acuras means 1.6% of Acuras and 1.6% of Hondas. It's a percentage, not a raw number.

1.6% shouldn't get the average driver worried, but it does mean that thousands of cars could potentially be affected.

What are the terms and conditions of the extended 7 year/100,000 miles warranty? Is this a prorated warranty or is it fully covered by Acura/Honda?

It only covers the transmission, nothing else. It acts like the original warranty, just extended to 7 year/100,000 miles.

I have a 2000 TL. I'm with the US Forces in Germany. My tranny went out on 15 June 02. It's 6 months later now and there still isn't a resolution eventhough a "Supervisor" has been assigned to look into it at HONDA USA in California. I haven't been offered another car to drive or anything. My German Honda dealer can't seem to get the parts for repair. I'm beginning to believe I have a $30000 ornament. International phone calls are being paid by me.

Man, that really sucks. What parts are they waiting for? If your tranny is gone, they are supposed to give you a rebuilt tranny anyway.....if you are still under warranty.

Any early symptoms?

I just bought a 2000 TL a couple of months ago. It was very smooth in the beginning, but now seems to "lurch" or jump when you take it up to around 40 mph, then let off the accelerator. No panel lights or noises at this point. Just curious...thanks.

Why would you do such a crazy thing? WHY? I mean Acura is taking care of the problem, Why would you petition for something they already taking care of?
