All I've ever had to do is jumper one of the two connectors (one w/ brown wire I believe) on my '92 civic, for when you set the ignition timing.
I use one of those cheap little electrical connectors that come in a set, usually a variety of diff. types in the box. Looks like a steak fork or whatever w/ two prongs, you just twist the prongs w/ needle-nose pliers so it fits, and it works perfectly.
