There's a smog spending limit--depending on the value of the car, there is a monetary cap on the amount you are required to spend smog-legalizing your car before you get an automatic pass, which I think is a bit north of $100. Check it out--it can be an opportunity to get some other stuff done to "smog legalize" your car, AND you'll get an automatic pass.
