DIY: Mod STOCK Fogs to turn on w| Headlights off.

Sick of not being able to turn on your stock fogs without turning on your headlights... this mod should help.

This works for most newer gen cars. Post back here if youre brave enough to test it on your car and it works.

Turn This...

Into This

Tested on (so far)
--Accord 6th gen
--Accord 7th gen

You need to get access to the rear of the fog light switch.
Remove the coin holder tray.
There are two screws where the coin holder sits... remove them
The little dash panel should come loose and can be taken out easily
giving you access to the rear of the switch
IF YOU CANT FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET TO THE SWITCH... POST BACK HERE AND ILL TRY TO FIND A DIAGRAM.

IF YOUR WIRING DOESNT MATCH... POST BACK HERE AND ILL TRY TO FIND THE WIRING DIAGRAM FOR THE FOGS.

You should see 5 wires coming from the fog light switch connection.

Cut the BLUE wire behind the switch (leave some slack at the switch side)
Splice into the RED/BLACK wire (dont cut it, strip some insulation off)
Strip and Attach the BLUE wire(switch side) to the RED/BLACK wire.

http://img284.imageshack.us/img284/35/pic2cr.png

Use electrical tape or whatever to seal the connections. Dont forget to cover the open BLUE wire

Reassemble.

How it Works...

The blue wire recieves power from Red/Green which trips the relay to turn on the lights.

Red/Green is hot whenever your headlights are on.

Red/Black is hot whenever your headlights OR parking lights are on.

Cutting the blue wire on the switch and attaching it to Red/Black will let you run the lights with the parking lights or headlights.... (and will also bypass the relay that turns them off when your Highs are on)

Note I: If you have a stock or aftermarket alarm system that flashes the Parking lights, your fogs will flash too... if you leave the fog switch on.
Solution: Turn off you fogs, or leave your parking or headlights on.

Note II: I will not be responsibe for your f*ck ups. This info had been compiled from various sources. I havent done this mod on my car, since i do not have fogs, but this has worked for others here, and it should work for you.

another question

hello,

I have a piaa fog light kit, but I want the stock switch on the inside. I've already have the switch alone. I need to know what each of these colored wires run if possible.

http://img284.imageshack.us/img284/35/pic2cr.png
I'm assuming the:

black = ground...
red = 12v power
orange = dimmer for the switch light
black/red = 12v when lights are on
blue = 12v from when highs beams are on

from the posts this is what I've composed. Not so sure on the orange though (assuming because of stereo installs)

also I'll need to know from harness A in the stallation PDF what are the two colored wires connected to the 14 pin harness that is connected behind the headlight switch on page 8 sequence #36. it says red/black and yellow. are these the colors of the wires aready there or are these the colors of the wire from harnes A?

this would realy help me in incorperating an aftermarket fog light with the stock fog light switch.

thnx

how much did the stock switch cost you, last i saw they werent cheap?
i setup a led and toggle switch for my fogs but a stock switch would be cleaner and not as bright on the eyes.
if you get it installed i think some of us would like to know the wiring as well, so good luck and what you posted looks right.
not sure about orange though, does the fog switch dim with the cluster?
i know my cc switch doesnt ever dim, but my wiring is hacked to shit from a previous owners alarm install. if it is supposed to dim then yes i think that would be orange, an orange wire also comes off of the dimming adjustment switch as well as the stereo.
good luck and let us know the outcome

Aw, I was to do this but I found out that my oem civic fogs only have 3 wires.

Misa 04-08-2006 08:23 PM

red/black is the switch illumination (hot when headlights or parkinglights are on)
red is the "ground" for the illumination (runs to illumination control dimmer)

the switch closes the connection between Blue (in) and Green (out)

black is the ground for the indicatior when the switch in on.

hey,

thnx for the input jani. It has realy helped me depict the wiring diagram. You guys probably know I'm new to this forum. So, I'm going to do a DIY for this project. And I wont post unless everything goes well. I'll keep you guys posted.

thnx :)

4cylinder4ever 04-08-2006 11:36 PM

This is what I've compiled so far as for the wiring after deciphering the wiring diagrams with the info from jani. I'll attempt to do this and set up a DIY also.

For now this is only a wild guess so I wont be held responsible for any damage caused during/after installation. (most DIY's have dislaimers, so this is mine) Again, I wont be help responsible if anything happens to your car using this information. for the time being please wait till I've attempted this on my own vehicle to see if there's any problems.

thnx

the diagram looks pretty accurate.

Illumi+ is Hot (from parking lights)
Illumi- is the lead that goes to the dimmer. I dont know how if the dimmer will affect the operation of the relay... if it does, - can be sent to ground.

I just wanted to make sure that this diagram:

http://img284.imageshack.us/img284/35/pic2cr.png

is exactly what each prong on the switch is in the correct order if I was to stand the switch up right like so.

With the switch facing up....

Black
Orange
Blue
Red/Black
Red

edit: ive heard you can easily open the switch up and take a look inside

i tried tooking for a wiring diagram for your civic's fogs, but i had no luck.

i assume black is ground, and the reds are for the switch and the illumination of the switch.

Thanks for the try :). I guess if I was to do this mod then it would be somewhere deeper on the wiring harness.

4cylinder4ever 04-11-2006 10:15 AM

ok so I attempted to wire in the switch using the power from the cruise switch. everything works just fine. But Now my problem is that I cant remember how to hook up the piaa x1100 wires. I know that the white/red wires are power and black/brown is ground, but I hooked that up to my switch, but wont work. I tried looking for the manual online with no luck either. so untill piaa gets back to me I'm not sure if I can go any further...

did your lights come with any knid of diagram?

4cylinder4ever 04-11-2006 07:54 PM

yeah. The piaa guys emailed me the diagram. I'm going to have to wait until thursday to try it again. It looks like there's some tweaking to what is attached to the switch. I'll you guys posted.

oh and cpvdh, I got the switch for about 15.95 + shipping. I dont know if its too much or not.

BlingSingh1 08-22-2006 06:58 AM

I have a 02 MDX on which i want the foglights to be on as indicated in the diagram above. After accessing the back of my lights switch, i saw that there are a bunch of wires there and that there is no red/black wire. Please let me know where i can get a wiring diagram for that or help me get whatever info i need to make it work. Thanks

aznpimpin89 10-04-2006 05:33 PM

K, i have this, but i dont consider it a mod. my fog lights WONT come on when my low beams are on. any way to fix this? do i bind the fog light wires with the head light wires?

laylow305 12-31-2006 04:07 PM

I did this to my '00 Accord that has OEM fogs and it worked perfectly. Did it back in May and have had no issues with it at all.

N/m - I am a fool, I got confused,.. I got them workin :) Actually, I own a 92 RS teggy. Alls I had to do was find the Red/Yllw wire behind the fog switch(closest to harness), clip it and run a new wire over the top of the steering collum behind the dash, to the Defrost switch's black/yllw wire - Both the loose wire, and the one closests to the harness. Got em right on :)
