1993 Accord brake rotor replace tips.
 
Hi guys.

I've done disc brakes in the past with many cars, but this is the first time I've had to remove the axle bolt to remove the rotor. Is this true of was I inhaling too much asbestos when I was looking at it?

And if this is the case, do you guys have any tips? From what I read, I have to chisel the metal that's folded in, remove the axle bolt, use pry bar to keep the rotor/hub from moving, then slide it out after I remove the cv.

I found the pdf and I've gone through this. Very similar to what the Hayes manual says.

So after the caliper is out (<10 mins for me) I need to...:
1. Remove the spindle nut
2. Remove 4 bolts from the back holding the rotor
3. Push the axle in, and the axle should pop out of the hub?
4. Mallet/hammer the rotor out.
5. Remove the hub assembly.

Does this sound right to you guys?

Man, why did Honda do this? This is the most painful rotor replacement I've done in my life. I've replaced rotors on Audi's, Toyota's, and Nissans and they were 1/2 as bad as this one.

gotta love the accords.....yeah the front rotors are on the hub itself. your right. i cant recall but i think there are two bolt holes on the hat of the rotor facing outward. if the rotors are stuck you could use a bolt and thread it through the bolt holes on the face of that hat. but yes you do need to take off a lot of stuff on 90-97 accords. another tip is to really take the car to a shop if all you need is resurfacing. the will put the vehicle on the "on-the-car-brake-lathe" to resurface them.

i think on those accords, you have to take off the steering knuckle and remove the 4 bolts that hold the hub unit on there. and then there are 4 more bolts that hold the rotor on the hub. and the axle nut is easiest to take off by taking your wheel off and taking the center cap off, putting the wheel back on, lowering the car back down and putting the socket through the center hole. if your wheels dont have a big enough hole, the spare wheel should. dont worry about the metal thats folded in on the nut. it shouldnt stop you from getting it off.

Man's got to know his limits. I'm going to ask around and see if I can find a shop that will do the "on-the-car-brake-lathe" and see if my rotors can be turned. That should take care of it for a while.

The idea of turning the axle with the wheel down is a nice idea though. I'll give the lathe a shot, and if that fails, I'll start braking this thing down.

i have a DIY on this specific model and yea...it took me 8 hours for both sides.

is it really hard to get the rotors off fromthe sterring knuckle arm? cuzI tried and sheesh! damn rotors wont come off. waht do I do to get it off? good car bad way of designing the rotors. So im all over trying to find answer to this and how to take it off. Please let me know. If theres a tool that is used to get the hub off and apart fromthe steering knuckle let me know.

you have to pound them out with longer bolts of the same thread.

you know man your so helpful! jsut today a friend of mine toldme the same thing I tried no to ask him cuz dont wanna boost his ego (laughs) but i came home and to check my email with a reply i had gotten from you in HondaAcura site man you said to do the same thing he did which is totally awsome!

So I'll go and try that out when I go to school only I'll thank you for it mostly and tell my instructer that I had done a research onhow to do it and some cool guy had helped me out. This way shows I worked on researching whichis a good thing. So thanks for the tips yo and Ill get back at cha when I get it the damn thing out!

PS you got an Accord what year? ya got pix? could you send tome on my email ? if you can. you can check my Accord out in this site Honda Show Off only mines a bit scarry lookin LOL Im not done with it.

1. blast off the axle nut
2. take cotter pin and castle nut off (17mm) and seperate the lower ball joint out with whatever method but i prefer this way...

i used a pry bar to fill the gap

3. push the axle through the spline? or hole or whatever
4. bust loose the 4-14mm bolts facing towards you but dont take them off, just loosen them like 180 degrees...(you might want to do this b4 taking the axle out otherwise it'll just spin. but if you have a impact gun, then go for it)
5. flip the whole assembly around and there will be 4 star shaped bolts, a 12pt 10mm socket will do. so bust those out.
6. get 4 10mmx1.25 and 60mm bolts long. costed me 6 dollars at orchard supply.
7. install and thread like halfway in and follow this video...

well, if you are on 56k then it sucks for you but i shall explain it. once all of the bolts are in, just hammer the bolts in, and the whole assembly should pop out. remove the bolts
8. you should get something like this.

remove the 4-14mm bolts.
9. replace rotor and reassemble the assembly onto the car. the star shaped bolts should go on TIGHT, as tight as you can because it is supposed to be pressed on but fuck honda.

10. after that reverse assembly and light off a couple of these in celerbration of your new rotors :thumbsup:

It's easy if you know what you're doing. I use old head bolts to thread in the hub and then I pound it out with a BFH. On the car lathes are better if the rotor has enough material left to refinish it. It's better because the lathe is mounted to the vehicle and any inperfections in the wheel bearings/hubs will be there when the rotors are refinished so you won't notice any vibration later.

Ahh I see hummthis seems to be the way to get it off huh? if its a doit yourself kinda way I doubt shops do this unless its not a big name shops like the Honda dealer or something lol. well thanks man I apreciate your time to let me know how you did it. I will try it asap when I can.

I'm at the dealership and we all do it this way, if you're not a hack you shouldn't hurt anything.
