To prelude or to wrx, that is my question
Whats up kids, I drive a 93 prelude si, w/ 106000 miles on it, and I have the choice to drop a jdm motor in it, and pimp it out, or save up another year and go with a subby wrx, that I would have no money to fix up for awhile.
Need some opinions on what I should do, mainly I'm worried bout reliability.
Thanks

i know MANY lude guys who have done this and regret it.. mainly b/c of the poor quality of their transmissions... just wait another year to find out if they have improved on their trannys..

prelude trannys suck?? my friend beats the crap out of his and it has no problems.
I have heard of probs with subby wrx tranny being 4 wheel drive and all.

No. She means the WRX tranny probs. The Preludes kick ass.
Personally I prefer the Prelude to the WRX... well I prefer the Prelude to most cars.
So my vote would be to do up the Prelude. That's what I would love to do.

The only "stories" I've heard about the WRX trans is if you launch hard. Personally I'd rather have the WRX but I'm not big on going back into car payments so if I were you I dont know if thats what I would do. The WRX has WAY more potential and is the new hot car so aftermarket tuners are making everythinig for it.

Eh, save for a 2000 Prelude
1999 Honda Prelude (Nighthawk Black)

get the WRX for THATPRELUDEGUY'S reasons.
if you're dragging the scooby trans will fall apart but if you're doing anything else...
imagine being able to smoke tegs and ludes in the summer, and driving fast in the snow during the winter. that's the beauty of all wheel drive.

If you plan on heavy duty auto crossing, a Prelude is no match to a WRX. Even on the street, the WRX will have more from the showroom to start with than a Prelude. First off, there is no substitue for all wheel drive. Second, the WRX stock brakes are far superior to Prelude's stock brakes. They really aren't even comparable cars. It's more of what you are looking to do with your driving style. Take that into consideration before you make the purchase.

Yeah, for as die-hard Honda and Prelude that I am, I have to agree with Preludeguy, a 2000 lude's got nothing on a rex. AWD is one thing, plus it just packs more of a punch. And yeah, brakes factor in too. One thing I noticed about the STi though, just like the 03' Sentra Spec-V, the calipers are fit so tight and close to the wheels that you really can fit anything smaller than the 17s that are on them, which means expensivo winter tires if you live in the snow belt, bummer.

WRX would be a neat car, but a pimped out 'lude would be sweet. I'd look into a 5th gen if you want some more power. Drop a JDM motor in that
but as for the WRX (in your situation), it wouldnt be the same compared to riding in a pimp'ed out car.
basically, stock vs pimped.

A 4th gen would smoke a 5th gen anyday of the week. OBD1 and its lighter. The 5th gen motors only have a little more hp, but with obd1 I can run a straight pipe with no probs and that is a big power bolt on.
Anyways no one really answered my ? bout the reliability issue.

Allright, here's the deal..... you will need to invest a lot in to suspension and brake upgrades in to your Prelude to get the handling even close to a WRX, and even with the best stuff, there is no substitute for AWD. So figure a good 3500-4500 for that. Then your engine mods, you do what you want. Interior, stereo, paint, whatever else you want to do you could easily invest 10 grand in to "pimping" (I hate that word) your Prelude. My advice is this: what kind of driving are you going to do? Lots of auto-X, track drivng, etc.? Or will it be mostly an everyday driver that you want to make faster and look better? I can tell you this about reliability.... the WRX is built from the factory for hard driving, and the Prelude, while reliable as an everyday car, isn't designed to drive hard all the time. Like I said before, it's hard to compare the two. They are two different cars with different DNA. No matter how you modify a Prelude, it can't compare with a WRX. Good or bad. Just a different car.

Yeah, I own a 4th gen, but he's right, I don't think a 4th gen could clean up on a 5th, straight pipe or not.
