I bought my 92 Si 4WS almost 2 years ago for $1800. It needed a lot of work, but the things it needed I wanted to replace with aftermarket parts anyway.

Once the VTEC engine goes in, the car will feel new again. Also, it didn't cost me that much money to do it either.

It's all up to you. If you plan on upgrading a car, I think the older car is ideal. Give it a second life. Why replace parts on a newer car. Plus, 4th gens are really fun to drive.

I bought a 92 4WS with 165,000 miles on it for $3200. It still needs a lot of love and I aint got the money to do it. So long as you realize that just because you replace the engine the rest of the car is still going to have 200,000+ and you'll have to replace a lot, then go for it. I had to replace all the tie rod ends, and the rubber on all the ball joints and a lot of the other rubber/boots for that matter on my car when I got it.
